What you need to do is create a custom Keystroke and Format script. Each would check the value of the check box and act accordingly. You can use the built-in date/number format/keystroke routines to keep it simpler. You'll have to decide what you want to do if a date is entered and the check box is then changed so that a number format should be used, and vice versa.
